Fees
A known price, before the work starts.
Work is quoted in fixed blocks of time at $400 an hour. You approve the block before it starts, and you approve any new block before more time is spent. No open-ended hourly bills.
How it works
- A free 15-minute call. Andrew checks for conflicts, hears what you need, and tells you whether the firm is a fit.
- A quote in blocks. He estimates the time the work needs and quotes it as a fixed block at $400 an hour.
- A written engagement. The engagement letter states the scope, the block, and the price. Work starts when you sign.
- No surprise bills. If the work needs more time than the block, you hear about it first and approve a new block before it starts.
What gets quoted this way
Most of the firm’s work fits a block: a workplace investigation, a handbook draft or review, a set of job descriptions, an accommodation decision, a defamation demand or response, a contract review, or a will and power-of-attorney package. Each matter is quoted after the free call, because the size of the work depends on the facts.
Costs paid to others, such as court filing fees, are separate and are named in the engagement letter.
Questions about fees
What is a block of time?
A set number of hours, quoted for a defined piece of work, at $400 an hour. A five-hour block, for example, is $2,000. You know the price before the work starts.
What if the work takes longer than the block?
Andrew tells you before the block runs out, explains why, and quotes the next block. Nothing beyond the approved block is billed unless you approve it first.
Why not just bill by the hour?
Open-ended hourly billing makes it hard for a business to budget. A quoted block puts the scope and the price on the table at the start, and any change in scope becomes a decision you make, not a surprise on an invoice.
Is the first call free?
Yes. The first 15-minute call is free. It is for a conflict check and to see whether the firm is a fit. Advice on your matter starts after a written engagement.
How is the engagement put in writing?
An engagement letter states the scope of the work, the size of the block, and the price. Work starts after you sign it.
